To really appreciate what four million people look like in a country 10% bigger than the UK you need to see New Zealand from the air. Vast amounts of farmland, forests, mountains, and volcanoes, plus the occasional settlement lie below.
Volcanic Plateau
Covering most of the North Island, this is home to the Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu volancoes.
Mt Taranaki
Not the highest volcano in New Zealand but the most distinctive, with a perfect cone shape from the ground, and a perfect circular shape from the air showing the extent of Egmont National Park.
The capital is possibly the most scenic New Zealand city from the air, if probably the most constrained. Not that it seems to have stopped houses from covering the steep hillsides, many only accessible by foot or cable car.
Whareroa
One the largest dairy factories in the world, and a key part of the Taranaki economy.
