Back in 2008, before things turned for the worst, I took a day trip from Damascus to the Lebanon to see the most impressive Roman ruins I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a few). Baalbek was a major temple complex, the remains of which still astound, from the six giant columns standing, to the intricate carvings.

Ruins of the Umayyad city of Anjar are not quite as impressive, but still an interesting stop on the way back into Syria.
