About an hour from Yazd is the incredible Kharanak, remains of a mud brick village once home to about 2,000 people, abandoned 120 years ago due to plague.

It’s a wonderful place to explore, and get lost in, an amazing 3D maze. You need to be careful though, there are plenty of holes around to fall down, and the strength of the floors and roofs isn’t guaranteed.

In the middle is a shaking minaret, designed to withstand earthquakes.

Down by the dry river is a 400 year old bridge.

Across which is a 200 year old mosque which offers good views back toward the abandoned village.
