If you like tanks, you’ll love the Tank Museum, the national home of everything tank related. Not sure I’d agree with TripAdvisor that it’s the best thing to do in Dorset, but it is certainly the best thing to do on a rainy day.
The main room told the history of the tank, with plenty of examples from WW1 to the present day.
The Trench Experience was evocative, particularly when I turned the corner to be ‘shot’ at by a machine gun emplacement….
The Tiger room featured five of the infamous German Tiger tanks for WW2, technologically advanced but unreliable and few in number.
The Discovery Room was filled with over 150 vehicles, mainly from WW2, T.E. Lawrence’s motorbike, and a section on the museum’s involvement with the making of the rather good film Fury.
Just up the road from the museum is Clouds Hill, the home of T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia), a small cottage managed by the National Trust. Good thing he was only 5,5ft as at 6ft my head was touching the rafters and the steep staircase was even tighter. It’s a rather touching place though, brought to life by a pair of very knowledgeable volunteers and well worth a visit.
