One of the best modern art galleries I’ve visited, The Broad opened in 2015 after a $140m development, to house part of the extensive collection of Eli Broad. He is one of 100 richest people in the world, and huge supporter of the arts and education in Los Angeles.
Free, though best with a timed ticket to avoid the large queues on the day, the gallery is strong on pop art, from the start with Warhol and Lichtenstein, to the more recent Jeff Koons.
Koons is well represented with his iconic Rabbit 1986, rather spooky Bubbles 1988, wonderful Balloon Dog 1994, and colourful Tulips 1995.
Yayoi Kusama struggled for many years to be accepted and recognised in the art world, but is now justifiably one of the most popular artists in the world. She was well represented by two works, the 45 second experience of Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away 2013.
And in my view the even better Longing for Eternity 2017.
More iconic works including Jasper Johns’ Flag 1967 and his playful Corpse and Mirror 1976.
Also playful was Robert Therrien’s Under The Table 1994.
The building itself a piece of art, with organic curves and shell structure, and some well lit stairs.
