One of the sunniest and most attractive parts of the country, though there is rather a lot of competition. Home to some beautiful heritage buildings and natural sights. Here are a few of my favourites…

Pekapeka Wetlands
Absolutely stunning, didn’t know what to expect but there are few things better to do on a sunny day in the region than take a walk around these wetlands. Plenty of boardwalks and amazing colours.

Otatara Pa Historic Reserve
Had a few navigation issues, got a little lost and didn’t find the pa site itself, but ended up above it enjoying the views and long golden grass.

Te Mata Peak
The best views in the region, out across the bay, a lovely if somewhat windy spot!

Art Deco
One of the main reasons that people visit the region. Napier gets all the attention, and the Art Deco Walk around town is a must do, but Hastings also has a large number of beautiful Art Deco buildings.

Bluff Hill Lookout
Great views over Napier and the port, easily accessible from town, with a nifty man made waterfall on the way up.

National Aquarium
Randomly the only place in NZ I’ve seen live kiwis, but it also contains a few fish. Nothing special by international standards but certainly worth a couple of hours to visit.
