New Zealand Toilets

Unconfirmed but New Zealand probably has more public toilets per capita than any other country. In a contrast to places like the US pretty much every park and town has facilities. Here are some of the more eye catching ones…

Kawakawa
Designed by local artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, these are a local landmark and a popular stop on route to the Bay of Islands. If you intend to use the facilities take care to avoid the coach parties that disgorge groups of camera wielding tourists.

Helensville
Nondescript inside but pretty stylish from the outside, though not a huge amount else to see in Helensville.

Kepler Track
Seen quite a few toilets in unusual places while tramping but this one about 1,000m up at the end of alpine section of the Kepler Track is my pick. On a clear day it’d have stunning views behind it. The day I went less so…

Wellington
Award winning toilets, deservedly so for a great piece of design.

Westhaven, Auckland
Part of the beautiful new promenade around Westhaven harbour, these are probably the plushest public toilets in Auckland.

Chelsea, Auckland
Random pick from Auckland parks, demonstrating that they can be both smart and functional.
