One of the larger islands in the Hauraki Gulf, Kawau Island is home to Governor Grey’s attractive Mansion House, a historic copper mine, and around 350 private homes only accessible by boat, though fewer than 60 are occupied all year round. Surrounded by lush turquoise sea, it is easily accessed by ferry from Sandspit, 45 minutes drive north from Auckland.
