Back in 2008 I travelled from Aleppo south to the lovely Hama. Half way between Aleppo and Damascus, it was filled with parks, historic buildings (including the spectacular Azem Palace), mosques and huge wooden water wheels, creaking away bringing water up from the river for irrigation.
