Another day trip from Hama took me to Masyaf Castle, home of the original Assassins, which was impressive but merely a warm up for the mighty Crac Des Chevaliers. Lawrence of Arabia said it was “perhaps the best preserved and most wholly admirable castle in the world”, possibly true back in 2008, sadly probably not true today given the shelling it has received during the civil war.
