The west coast is a very special part of Auckland, with epic black volcanic sand beaches, huge waves, and dramatic cliffs. Amazingly all of this is only 45 mins drive from Auckland CBD…
Whatipu, Karekare, Piha and the others are all special in their own way, but none have one of these, a huge inland sand dune, surrounded by temperate rain forest and a lake.
Bethell’s Beach is also the start of one end of the Te Henga walkway, a 16km coastal walk which offers spectacular views and a serious workout for the legs.
O’Neil’s Beach is home to one of the coolest benches I’ve come across, complete with book recommendations!
The northern end finishes at Constable Road, a short walk away from the well known but surprisingly dull Goldie Bush Walkway.
At the end of which is a short track to the scenic Mokoroa Falls.
The Mokoroa Stream Track is also accessible from here, though you are guaranteed very wet feet…
