Originally dating from 1902, the cable car offers a short (five minutes) but atmospheric (and less sweaty) trip up the hill from Lambton Quay to the Wellington Botanic Gardens.
Other than some accidental optical effects the track starts off as a pretty standard piece of railway line.
Pretty soon though it’s like you’re in the ending of the film 2001 as LEDs installed in 2014 for the New Zealand Festival line the tunnels. Quite unexpected and magical.
At the top is the unexpectedly fascinating Cable Car Museum, the short videos are particularly good.
I’d love to ride a cable car 😊
We also liked the cable car museum! 🙂
