Balibó

default

The small village of Balibó came to international prominence in 1975 when the invading Indonesian army killed five Australian based (2 Australians, 2 British and 1 New Zealander) journalists. They were murdered by senior soldiers to cover up the actions of the army. It took years for the truth to come out and no one has ever been charged for their murder. The Flag House is now a community centre, home to a museum, shop, coffee stall and learning centre. It is known as the Balibó Flag House due to the large Australian flag painted on the side of it.

Next to the flag house, is a statue of Liurai de Balibó (local ruler) built during the Indonesian occupation. Look out for the prominent number 27 on the base, as Indonesia considered Timor-Leste to be their 27th province.

Balibó is home to the second oldest fort in Timor-Leste, dating back 350-370 years. It was built by the Portuguese to protect Batugade in the on-going power struggle with the Dutch over control of this part of South-East Asia. It was used as a Portuguese administrative building, and the house inside the fort was built in the 1920s for the then senior colonial administrator. It is now Balibó Fort Hotel, one of the best places to stay in the country, offering good food and an infinity pool!

The fort is also home to the Balibó Veterans’ Museum (to the left inside the main gate), a small but informative place opened in April 2022. It tells the stories of veterans who served in Timor-Leste during World War II, through the Resistance, INTERFET and in the International Stabilisation force. Entry is free.

Igreja Santo Antonio Balibó is the main church in town, with colourful paintings behind the altar.

On the outskirts of town is Balibó Cemetery (Aldeia La vila Balibó).

Further along this road is Gruta Morutau, where 14 crosses mark the Stations of the Cross lead to a shrine to the Virgin Mary, and at the top a statue of Jesus on the cross.

To finish with a few more photos from around Balibó.
