Tobins Track

A straightforward and very scenic walk, Tobins Track offers wonderful views of Arrowtown and the surrounding Wakatipu Basin. It was a cold start by the Arrow River, even at 1pm most of it was in shade in mid-June, with everything covered in thick frost.

Such a contrast from the places that do get sunshine.

It is flat until after crossing over this bridge over the river, when the steady climb starts up a 4WD track.

The track was originally created in the 1870s by Thomas Tobin, who had his family home nearby.

It didn’t take long to start getting views.

Which only improved as the track continued to climb.

At the end is a lookout point with a bench and incredible views.

If I haven’t had been sick I would have continued further uphill to the summit of Mount Beetham, a steep 250m climb from the end of Tobins Track. Instead I returned back the way I came, with perhaps even better views as the light improved.

Afterwards I stopped off at the historic Arrowtown Cemetery.

From the Arrowtown War Memorial opposite the cemetery were great views of the hills around Arrowtown, with the Tobin Track clear to see.
