My final day on the A2O Trail, finishing up at the historic town of Oamaru after cycling nearly 300km over six days from Twizel. Between Tokarahi and Oamaru is basically farmland, which the trail weaves through thanks to the generosity of land owners. Tokarahi is a tiny place, with some old buildings, and even more old cars!

After five days of excellent weather it finally started to turn but thankfully remained dry if a little cloudier than I’d like for photography.

The farms were mainly dairy, but also had some sheep and cattle.

In the middle of seemingly nowhere is the Rakis Railway Tunnel, dating from late 19th century, which turns a corner so the middle is pitch dark…

The Enfield Presbyterian Church was closed and a little worse for wear but still quite attractive.

The rail then mainly ran next to roads, better than being on the road, but still not particularly enjoyable.

Things improved on the final stretch going through Oamaru and their lovely Botanic Gardens.

Before reaching the official end of A2O at Friendly Bay (next to Holmes Wharf), which certainly looked an inviting colour.

Before returning the bike I did a bit of exploring of what was a very prosperous little town in the 19th century, demonstrated by the grandeur of the buildings.

This sign at the public toilets caught my eye…

I also loved this…

Lookout Point provides the best view of Oamaru.

Along with an interesting sign post.

I finished with a short trip out to Bushy Beach, a lovely spot home to endangered yellow-eyed penguin.
