In the last couple of months before I left Timor-Leste in February 2025, I set myself the challenge of walking around every neighbourhood in the capital Dili. This was a wonderful way to explore the city, and get some exercise during the wet season. This post covers walks around the Tasi Tolu lakes and surrounding area, which include the western part of Comoro and Madohi to the north.

Tasi Tolu is the one of the most scenic areas of Dili to walk around, and a fly a drone above.

Often it can be still first thing in the morning with the lakes offering wonderful reflections.

They have been classified as an Important Bird Area, and this is one of the few places I reliably see birds that can be easily photographed in Timor-Leste.

There are building around much of the lakes, which add to the reflections.

To the north of the lakes, in the Madohi area, isn’t beautiful but was an interesting place to explore on foot.

There was plenty of street art.

Along with some abandoned cars and buildings.

More abandoned cars to the east of Dili airport.

To the north east of Dili airport is the small community of Beto, which feels a world away from the capital. It is home to a green chapel and large cemetery.
