Sweden’s capital is one of my favourite cities, with a huge amount to see and do, beautiful and varied architecture, waterfronts everywhere, and in the height of summer seemingly endless days. It’s the perfect weekend escape for those in Europe, or an essential stop on any travels through Scandinavia. Gothenburg isn’t quite in the same league but it’s only three hours away by train and worth a day or two to explore.
Vasamuseet
It was a genuinely jaw dropping experience when I first saw the Vasa, a near perfectly preserved 17th Swedish warship. Dates from the days of the Swedish wars with Poland / Lithuania and is the best museum of its kind in the world, though I still have a soft spot for the Edwin Fox in Picton.
Skansen
One of the best examples I’ve seen of a historic village, collecting buildings from around the country, set in beautiful parkland.
Medelhavsmuseet
Not huge, but nicely set up museum with impressive artifacts from Egypt and Cyprus, housed in a rather beautiful building.
Naturhistorska Riksmuseet
One of the best natural history museum I’ve been to (and I’ve been to a few), particularly if stuffed animals and giant squids in jars are your thing.
Architecture
I was reminded when sorting out photos for this post how varied and interesting the architecture in Stockholm is. Generally not flash but nicely proportioned in relation to the setting. Makes for a lovely place to just wander around and get lost in.
Gothenburg
Home to a somewhat ugly Opera House, a much more attractive train station, and floating car parks!
