One of the largest modern art galleries in the world just got bigger, by over 22k sqm, and added probably the best free viewing platform in London. The Switch House is a striking ten story addition designed by the original architects of Tate Modern, Herzog & de Meuron. It can be entered from the Turbine Hall or via a walkway on level four.
I entered via the Turbine Hall to check out The Tanks, three quite surreal spaces that were briefly opened before work started on building the Switch House, and are now dedicated to live art.
I love the industrial details that have been kept in the design.
Heading up through the floors offers a striking if very austere combination of concrete and wood.
The floor plan gets progressively smaller toward the top, with events spaces, and staff and public restaurants.
The public viewing platform at the top offers 360 degree views across central London.
