An enjoyable morning walk up to a pair of Uma Lulik, sacred Timorese houses used for traditional ceremonies. These are more common in the districts but there are a few in Dili, with these ones accessible via a 7km return walk up 400m above the Comoro River in West Dili.

From the end of the #5 microlet route we started just before the sun rose, heading straight up a steep hill, which was basically the case for the whole walk there.

The perfectly timed sun broke over the hills as we climbed.

The path was initially marked by a number of white crosses, and offered views, plus a few buildings in the bush.

As we climbed higher the views improved further, out over the city and the Comoro River below.

There were two Uma Lulik, one used for traditional male, the other traditional female, ceremonies.

We organised with the family who maintain the Uma Lulik to visit so got access inside and an understanding of how they are used (see the video above for more explanation).

After a welcome break under shade with food and water we returned back down the way we came, getting to enjoy the views ahead.

A few sights from the return walk, past cows, buildings, and a cemetery on a hill near the start of the walk.
