Day two of a 46km three hike day through the more mountainous parts of Timor-Leste, and the only full day of hiking as we had to drive 3-4 hours each way from Dili on the first and last days. We covered over 18km, up 600m and down over 1,000m, in pretty hot and exposed conditions. Hiking in Timor-Leste is excellent but can be tough!

Before breakfast I took my drone up to explore the scenic landscape around Kanurema.

It was then time to start walking, passing Uma Lulik, traditional Timorese sacred houses.

The morning light lit up the landscape beautifully.

This was the only main road we saw in three days hiking, by this church.

Lovely scenery and views back toward Mt Rabilau, which we summited the previous day.

There is always plenty of variety hiking around Timor-Leste, from traditional houses to coffee to mountains and rivers to substantial amounts of mud!

We then made the steep at first climb up Mt Hebau.

The views were pretty incredible, could easily be in the European Alps rather than Southest Asia!

At the summit were houses and an Uma Lulik, and a cemetery on an adjacent summit.

We headed along the ridgeline to find a good spot for lunch.

After which I encountered the worst mud I’ve yet come across in Timor-Leste!

The spectacular views made up for any discomfort though.

The range of buildings and architecture is one of the treats of hiking here.

We finished the day heading downhill to the small community of Laclo to spend the night camping in the grounds of a school.
