Only 20 minutes drive from the start of the Routeburn Track, Kinloch is a blissful spot at the top of Lake Wakatipu. There’s nothing there other the historic (open since 1868) Kinloch Lodge (which has a YHA hostel wing) and a few holiday baches.
It was a little chilly in early June, but offered some beautifully crisp and atmospheric morning starts.
It was a great base for three day walks on the Sugarloaf / Rockburn Track, Routeburn Track, and Invincible Gold Mine Track.
The scenery getting there was pretty impressive as well, it’s only 30 minutes drive from Glenorchy.
We can imagine how cold it would be in the morning when these pictures were taken!
